As far as we know, we are the only coral aquaculture greenhouse operation that utilizes ONLY natural light in our greenhouse. Not surprisingly, corals love the sun! It can be a rough life outside; however, corals have the amazing ability to remember the stress they have been through previously and gain resistance to further damage from that cause. Although we like to fancy ourselves as experts after 20 years in business, (with more than 25 years of experience in reefs) we must admit – many of them have seen 60 degrees, and lived to tell the tale. Or 85 degrees. Calcium of over 500, below 250…each time, they adapt. Many times we have heard the sad tale of a tank crash from one of our valued customers, followed up by the amazed “But my Reef Farm corals LIVED!”
This is the place farm corals go to be put “in production”. If a coral enters the farm as an aquacultured piece already, all we have to do is wait for it to grow, frag it, wait for it to grow, frag it! This is preferable to us as we do not have to keep track of how much of the coral is wild collected. You would THINK if you purchased a frag that would mean it is aquacultured, but sadly, it doesn’t. Just because a piece of identical genetic tissue is separated from the mother, that does not mean the frag is now aquacultured. It could possibly be accurately labeled as cultured, but that’s all.
Here at TRF we take aquaculture seriously. When we say we provide 100% aquacultured frags, that’s exactly what we mean. We have coral strains here that date back 25 years; not only have they never been in the ocean, but their great-great-great-great-great (you get the idea) grandparents weren’t even in the ocean. When you receive a TRF frag, you can rest assured that it was produced as sustainably as possible.
